Thesis/Dissertation Week: Writing Your Way into Your Research - Writing an Introduction for Your Dissertation

Cohosted with the Office of Graduate Student Life

In many genres of scholarly writing, we are asked to provide the context for our research, connect our research to existing problems, gaps, or scholarly conversations, and explain our project aims; this often occurs in the introduction. But how? In this interactive workshop, participants will learn strategies for planning and writing an introduction that positions one’s research in rhetorically savvy ways. We will discuss some typical writing moves made in introductions of theses or dissertations. We will examine sample introductions and other resources, and participants will leave the workshop with an outlined plan for a current introduction they are drafting.
