Writing Center peer consultants are talented and accomplished undergraduates from across the university. Our current group of peer consultants includes majors from Biology, Engineering, History, Economics, Philosophy, Global Affairs, English, Neuroscience, Psychology, and Theater.

We welcome faculty recommendations of strong writers in any discipline. To recommend a student as a peer consultant, please contact Susan Lawrence at slawrenb@gmu.edu

Qualifications for Peer Consultants

Peer consultants are strong writers who have good interpersonal skills and a passion for sharing their knowledge. Between four and eight peer consultants are selected each semester through a competitive process that includes faculty recommendations and an interview. Specific requirements for peer consultants include

  • 60 completed credit hours
  • a grade of “A” or proficiency credit in Honors 110 or English 302
  • an overall GPA of at least 3.0
  • an overall GPA of at least 3.5 in their major
Peer Consulting Education

Peer consultants enroll in English 389: Peer Consulting in the Disciplines, a one-credit, repeatable course that puts them in the Writing Center as full-fledged consultants and emphasizes learning through action. Peer consultants receive both a theoretical background in Writing Center consulting as well as practical guidance by an experienced graduate consultant mentor who will helps them prepare to work on their own.
