OWL Guidelines

Once you've registered, send your writing to us at owl@gmu.edu either as a Microsoft Word e-mail attachment. Tutors can only review one piece of writing at a time. All responses will take three to five school days. In that e-mail, please include the following:
  1. Provide the following contact information
    • your name
    • your e-mail address
  2. Describe the assignment
    • what is it?
    • when is it due?
    • for what class is the paper being written?
    • what draft are you sending us: first, second, third, final?
  3. What areas of the paper would you like help on?
    • thesis statement
    • introduction and/or conclusion
    • paragraph transitions
    • coherence
    • sentence structure
    • writing in English as a second language
    • any other concern you might have
When using OWL, please remember:

OWL Tutors Will
  • look for patterns in your writing that may help you understand your strengths and challenges
  • respond to concerns you have about your writing
  • suggest ways to improve your writing
  • ask rhetorical questions about your writing
OWL Tutors Will NOT
  • edit your paper (correct it for you)
  • proofread your paper (mark all errors)

If you want to schedule a face-to-face session, which we encourage, please visit the Writing Center's online scheduler or stop by the Writing Center's main office in Robinson Hall A114.
