OWL Guidelines
Once you've
registered, send your writing to us at owl@gmu.edu
either as a Microsoft Word e-mail attachment. Tutors can only review one piece of
writing at a time. All responses will take three to five school days. In that e-mail,
please include the following:
- Provide the following contact information
-
your name
-
your e-mail address
- Describe the assignment
-
what is it?
-
when is it due?
-
for what class is the paper being written?
-
what draft are you sending us: first, second, third, final?
- What areas of the paper would you like help on?
-
thesis statement
-
introduction and/or conclusion
-
paragraph transitions
-
coherence
-
sentence structure
-
writing in English as a second language
-
any other concern you might have
When using OWL, please remember:
OWL Tutors Will
-
look for patterns in your writing that may help you understand your strengths and
challenges
-
respond to concerns you have about your writing
-
suggest ways to improve your writing
-
ask rhetorical questions about your writing
OWL Tutors Will NOT
-
edit your paper (correct it for you)
-
proofread your paper (mark all errors)
