George Mason Review: An Introduction for Faculty
An exciting new classroom resource will be provided, free of charge, to instructors this May. Starting with its 2006-2007 issue, the George Mason Review, the journal of exemplary undergraduate student writing, will offer classroom-focused content. The Review will be an ideal resource for students, helping them learn through looking at work done by their peers.
Evaluating and dissecting essays written by peers, as opposed to those written by more experienced authors, can engage and encourage learners at all levels. The Review will contain student essays drawn from both the humanities and the sciences, allowing it to function in a variety of classrooms. Each essay will be preceded by notes from student and teacher describing the assignment and how the essay meets it, providing material for fruitful discussions on understanding instructors' expectations. A section of discipline-specific writing guides will let students see how their discipline fits with others, and will give them concrete, practical advice on how to proceed with papers.
Copies of the new Review will be distributed to instructors in May, and can be ordered for 2007-2008 classes at gmreview@gmu.edu.
