Online Tutoring
Online Writing Lab
This schedule is for our Online Writing Lab. You can schedule an appointment for a specific time and email your essay AND assignment instructions to owl@gmu.edu. Your tutor will give you feedback on your essay within the hour.

You can now sign up for an OWL session just like you sign up for a face-to-face session in the Writing Center, which means YOU set the date and time of the appointment! The benefits of the new system are that you will be able to:

  • View the OWL schedule previously only visible to our tutors
  • Sign up for an online session for your preferred date and time (as available)
  • Request an OWL session even before you have completed your draft (so long as you provide the draft by the time your appointment is scheduled)
  • Know exactly by what date and time you will receive your feedback (no more three to five day waiting period!)
  • Sign up for a session with a tutor with whom you have worked with in the past and would like to continue to build a good working relationship
Please follow the instructions below to sign up for your OWL appointment:

  1. Log in to the University Writing Center main page at writingcenter.gmu.edu (if you do not yet have an account with us, register following the “New User? Register Here” links)
  2. Select the “Online Writing Lab (OWL), Fall 2010” schedule from the drop down list of schedules. MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE OWL SCHEDULE, AS ALL OTHER SCHEDULES ARE FOR FACE-TO-FACE SESSIONS
  3. Click on a WHITE box (white boxes indicate available sessions) and enter the appropriate information
  4. Email your Word document (we can only accept .doc format) to owl@gmu.edu AT LEAST ONE HOUR in advance of your online session so we make sure we have the document you would like to have tutored. When you send your email please provide the following information:
  • Date the assignment is due
  • The assignment prompt as a Word .doc file (if an electronic copy is available) or a summary of the requirements of the assignment
  • What you would like the tutor to focus on during the session (thesis, intro or conclusion, flow, integration of sources, etc).
You will receive feedback within ONE hour of your scheduled appointment. If you have any questions, please call 703-993-1200.
