Referrals, Session Confidentiality,
and Proof of Sessions
Referring a Student
If you have students in your courses who you think would benefit from sessions in
the Writing Center, you can refer them by
- sending an e-mail to wcenter@gmu.edu
-
writing a note for the student to bring to the Writing Center
-
sending a note to us through campus mail at: Writing Center, MSN 2G8.
In all cases, you should give the student's name, your name, the course, and specify
the kind of writing assistance the student requires. The more specific you are,
the better we will be able to assist the student. You should also let us know how
(e-mail, phone, note in campus mail) the tutor should contact you to discuss the
session. You must inform your student that s/he has been referred to the writing
center. We do not contact the student.
Session Confidentiality
If you have referred a student and want to find out what occurred in a session,
you'll need to be sure to tell the student that you would like to talk to the tutor
about the session. We keep session notes for everyone we see. A student may opt
to allow the session to be shared with his or her professor, or the student may
decide to keep the session private. If a student decides that we may not discuss
the session with the instructor, then we do not, even if the student has been referred.
If the student says that we may discuss the session, the tutor will contact you
as directed.
Proof of Sessions Teachers sometimes ask students
to bring some kind of proof that they have come to a session at the Writing Center.
In such a case, you may not necessarily want to discuss the session with a tutor,
but rather just have evidence that your student is seeking assistance with a paper.
If you want this kind of proof, tell the student to ask for a "Visit Verification"
form which lists the date and time of the session, the tutor's name, and brief remarks
about what was accomplished in the session. |
