Getting fitter and saving money are the two most common American New Year’s resolutions, but did you know that reading more is up there, too? It’s a great resolution to make. Reading improves the quality of life, enriches the mind, supports culture, and is a lot easier to follow than counting calories. Now that January has come and gone, the WC staff is here to remind you to keep turning pages throughout 2014.
Here are some great Best Books of 2013 lists to get you started:
- From The New York Times
- From the Huffington Post
- From Goodreads, the People’s Choice Awards
Here are a few books on my 2014 reading list:
- The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner (what I’m enjoying right now!) – A riotous novel about the 1970s art scene in New York, political intrigue in Italy, and the motorcycle culture of the American West.
- This is How You Lose Her by Junot Diaz – A beautiful and colloquially written account of modern love amongst the Domincan population of New Jersey, told in Diaz’s signature voice-driven style.
- Demon Camp by Jennifer Percy – A nonfiction book about a veteran suffering from PTSD who tries to find relief at an exorcism camp.
- The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud – A thrilling psychological portrait of women’s anger and attempts at connection in modern life.
